What is Roller Skating?
Roller skating is a great way to get around whether its for fittness, self-enjoyment or socialising.

They are made with wider wheels than aggressive skates, the reason being this allows for a faster, smoother feel requiring less effort. From thereon you can choose from the skates which are within the right size range for you.

Once you have this list of skates it will be far easier to make your choice, whether its for looks, enhanced features or price. All of the Roller Skates we have to sell are of good quality or higher and are sure to be what you need to get the fun and enjoyment you want out of them.

How Do I Know What Roller Skates To Buy?
There are many different aspects to take into consideration when chosing the skate that is right for you, the main reason for this being the wide range and diversity of features available to choose from.

Money - Of course you don't want to spend more money than is neccessary, however the quality of many skates can be discerned by the cost. The higher the cost, the better quality skate you are likely to get, and the lower the cost the lower the quality of the skate.

Age - If the skates are for a child it may be worth taking a look at the adjustable skates that we have to offer. Adjustable skates allow for several years growth which in the long run will save money where you would otherwise have to pay for new ones each year or so.
In each individual skates page there is a discription of which age group(s) applies to the skate and who they are suitable for. This infomation can be found next to the skates main picture.

Skill Level - All skates have a discription of what level of skater they are suited to. This again can be found in the skates individual page next to the main picture. It is important to pick the skate which is at the right level for you to ride comfortably especially if you are a beginner. We recommend anyone new to recreational skating or skating of any kind should choose carefully and not go for the top end skates straight away. Although when it comes to money the cheapest choice isn't neccessarily the best, most skates over £30 are going to give you the oportunity to learn and enjoy your first skating experience.

Fitting and Sizing, What should I get?
The Roller Quad Skates sizing varies slightly from brand to brand. Our general recommenations for sizing are as follows:

When purchasing we strongly recommend you check that the size of skate selected is correct according to any descibed adjustment the product page.

We would also recommend buying insoles when
:
- You decide to purchase Skates that are bigger than the recommended sizing advice given above.
- You have Narrow feet.

The most important part of selecting a skate is the fit
. If you choose a skate without taking into account any size change required for that specific skate you probably won't get the best out of them and ultimately won't use them.

Main features of a Quad Skate opposed to other types of Skates

  • Designed for a leisurely rides in the park or around the neighborhood, and fitness activity.
  • Comfort and durability are priorities.
  • Made out of various materials, from leather to low and high quality moulded composites.
  • Typically equipped with 4 wheels with a wheel size of 62mm.

Skate Construction, Key Features to look for

Wheels

  • Quad skates usually come with 62mm wheels for a low, stable center of gravity.
  • Most Quad Roller Skates are made of similar materials to each other, also following a very similar design for their shape.

Hardness of Wheels

  • Wheel hardness is measured in durometers. Lower numbers indicate a softer wheel and higher numbers indicate a harder wheel.
  • Durometer is denoted by the suffix "A" (example - 82A).
  • The typical Roller Skate wheel is 82A.
  • The hardness of Roller Quad Skate wheels are most suited to indoor riding and outdoor, providing they are used on a smooth surface.

Frames
  • Frames hold skate components in place.
  • Most Quad frames are made of aluminum alloy or nylon and fiberglass composites.
  • Make sure the frames you select are designed for the type of skating you plan to do.
  • Metal frames are stiffer, faster, and lighter, but typically cost more.

Liners

  • Many boots contain a cushioning liner usually made of a foam material.
  • Sometimes reinforced along the toe and sides for protection for increased stability.

Hard Shell

  • Constructed of molded plastic and similar to a ski boot.
  • The lower half covers and protects the foot.
  • The upper half wraps around and supports the ankle.
  • The two halves are connected with a hinge system that allows the ankle and boot to flex forward naturally.

Bearings
  • Bearings are the seven or eight balls at the center of each wheel.
  • Each bearing has an ABEC rating that indicates the precision of their manufacturing.
  • The higher the rating, the more precise the manufacture and the better the performance and speed.
  • The general ABEC range is ABEC-1, ABEC-3, ABEC-5 although bearings are not always measured in ABEC's.
  • Bearings are either serviceable or non-serviceable.
  • Serviceable bearings have a metal shield with a removable "C" ring, or a plastic/rubber type removable shield. These may be taken apart to be cleaned, lubricated or replaced.
  • Non-serviceable bearings have a metal shield that protects them. These only need to be wiped off with a clean cloth.
  • Bearings don't need to be cleaned after every use, but if they become wet, they should be cleaned and dried.
  • Never lubricate the outside of a bearing because that will attract dirt and contaminants.

Stoppers

  • Stoppers come as standard with our whole Roller Quad Skates range.
  • Stoppers are replaceable and easy to change over.
  • After substantial use of the stoppers they will wear down but not for some time.

Closures:
There are two primary forms of closure systems on in-line skates.

Buckles
  • Found mostly on recreational skates
  • Skates with buckle closures are the quickest to put on and take off
  • The number of buckles varies from 2 to 5

Laces
  • Similar to regular shoe laces
  • Less expensive than buckle closures, and offer a uniform closing
  • Allows for more adjustment variations
