It is very important for you to learn to balance on skates and that is the first lesson you should learn. Balancing techniques are a bit different between wheels and ice blades.
The ground’s smoothness can vary from a slippery rink to heavy friction. Actually you need a lot of strength in pushing the skates.
The more you practise the better you can skate. Many people think it is much easier to roller blade than ice skate as there is more resistance and there are fewer chances to slide and slip.
In the case of ice skating, it is a more challenging task as there are greater chances of slipping. The ice out there is smoother and you need to balance perfectly. You need to adjust your speed and weight from time to time. If at any point of time you have gained some speed, it becomes very hard to stop suddenly on the ice, so it is just as important to learn how to stop. Be aware of the conditions of the rink while you are skating.
If you are really serious about roller skating or ice skating, you should learn it from a professional skater.

Ice skating has been proved to be a great exercise for all age groups. Children who are over two years old can learn ice skating. The most common question regarding ice skates are how to choose a perfect pair of skates and how to take care of your ice skates.
Before buying a pair of ice skates, always remember that your complete body weight is placed on the two steel blades. So the boot which is placed on these blades needs to be supportive and strong. It is always wise to pay a better price for a skate because a good quality skate will not fold or buckle at an angle.
The size is equally important. You should see that the ice skates fit you properly and do not pinch in any way. When you are checking the size, try kicking the heel of the foot back so that your toes fit comfortably at the back of your ice skate.
You must always take care of your ice skates. Oiling them regularly is very important. You should use good boot oil so that the leather remains supple. Now if your skates become wet from sweat hang it upside down with the skate open widely. By choosing the right ice skates and taking care of them, you can enjoy ice skating for a long time.

Rollerblading seems to be a good choice for many skaters, especially during the off season. Roller blades are a great tool for speed skaters but not that helpful or useful for figure skaters.
Of late, there are many skaters who have started incorporating roller skating as a part of their training for speed skating. Inline skating takes place in the off season and provides an excellent experience for long and short track ice racers.
It is necessary for speed skaters to combine stretching, cardio training and weight training in their training schedule. This sort of training includes plyometrics, roller blading and bicycling. Keep in mind not to train with weights around your ankles as it may cause knee problems.
Off - ice skating even helps the ice skaters in maintaining their physical fitness during the summer season. This is very much beneficial for speed skaters. Off- ice skating provides more of resistance whereas inline speed staking helps in building respiratory and cardio endurance for long distance. It happens due to the requirement of a lot of energy in inline skating for sustaining speed.
In rollerblading, skaters have the chance to slow down and thus can concentrate more on perfecting their techniques. The speed skates are lighter than the inline skates.

Inline skates have been specifically designed for inline skaters. The frame is stream lined, and boasts less weight and more control than regular skates. The front stopper is quite similar to a toe pick. The boot has been designed in such a way so that it can support and bend at the same time. This particular characteristic of the inline skates helps the inline skater to make spins and jumps.
In case ice time is unavailable or limited you could go for roller blading. But serious skaters should make sure that the basic elements are being practised on inline skates. Roller blading should be avoided as it may hinder the progress of an elite figure skater.

The history of ice skates is quite fascinating. In the olden days ice skates were used by people in hunting during harsh winter. They were made up of leg bones of Ox, Deer and horses. Leather straps were used to attach ice skates to the feet and the skaters propelled along with a sharp metal spike attached to a long pole.
The design of the ice skates gradually changed for better. James A. Whepley made a notable change in 1859, to help people who had to travel long distances along the St John River. He made the ice skate in the form of steel blade attached to a pair of regular boots using leather straps. Over the years, ice skates underwent refined development in form and quality.
The present ice skates comprise of two blades with a hollow ridge in between. The blades run parallel to each other. The hollow between the blades, called radius of hollow has different depths depending upon the type of ice skating and the ability of the skater. Lesser the depth of hollow greater will be the speed for ice skating. Higher depth provides lesser speed but better control on ice skating. Improper maintenance and sharpening techniques for ice skate blades can adversely affect ice skating.

Ice skating is one of the most fun filled sports but it can turn into a terrible experience if proper care is not taken about various safety aspects particularly the clothing during practice.
Ice skating competitions are nerve breaking events. They combine precision and style. It is not only the perfection of ice skates that is important in practice or competition, but also the costume you wear when you ice skate make the big difference.
Many ice skaters underestimate the importance of costume, primarily due the high cost of clothing.
The costume must be form-fit to your body to avoid getting tangled while you ice skate. Form fitting of costume means it should allow you free movement when you make different movements during ice skating. Clothing materials like cotton or Polartec are better but should contain 5 to 10 per cent of Spandex or Lycra which provides stretch to the clothing.
An appropriate costume has a great influence on ice skater’s attitude. Attractive and comfortable clothing enhances your performance. Boot-cut skating pants, stretch camis for layering and shrugs in fashionable colours make you look professional. Practice skirts in fun fabrics like zippy flowered patterns and bold polka-dots make impressive clothing for the female ice skaters.
Double your fun and excitement in ice skating with the perfect costume!
