The students of Kingsbury High School in Harrow did an amazing job of raising nearly £450 for a charity by taking part in a roller skating disco.

The Year 9 team just could not wait to get involved in the roller disco in aid of a charity. Roller skating is something that students really enjoy and this event game them an opportunity to combine fun with a cause.

The roller skating event held last month was a success. The roller skating equipment was provided by a local roller skating company and the event was organised by the Year 9 team. The team also sold the tickets and refreshments.

The students were able to raise more than £450 by organising this roller skating event. All the proceeds of this roller disco will go to Amnesty International, an organisation that helps in protecting human rights all over the world.

The press officer at the school, Jo Robinson said that the gains received by the students from the roller skating event far outweighed the money that they raised. They got to be in a different environment and organising the event really helped in increasing their confidence levels. The students were able to enjoy as well as contribute towards a noble cause.

An ice rink could give Southampton the new Dean and Torvill

Filed under: Ice Skates — Kellie @ 12:10 pm

Many skating experts believe and say that a new ice rink in Southampton would help to discover more talent like Torvill and Dean, the Olympic heroes.

Hundreds of campaigners who love ice skating marched through the city on the 20th anniversary of the shutting down of the Top Rank ice skating rink in Southampton. Alan Abretti, the former British champion is backing the campaigners in support of a new ice rink in the city. Alan is the ice operations director at Cousins Entertainment. He, along with Robin Cousins, the 1980 Olympic Gold medalist set up temporary ice rinks around the globe. They also set up ice skating rinks during winter in Southampton and Winchester.

They are expecting around 50,000 people to turn up at the temporary ice rink during Christmas. This figure is more than some of the permanent ice rinks get. This shows the huge demand for an ice skating rink in Southampton City.

Alan said that ice skating as a sport needs a lot of support. He believes that a lot needs to be done to promote the sport and provide the ice skaters with better facility. If we have better ice rinks, we can see more ice skating champions like Dean and Torvill.

Lowestoft to get an ice rink as a Christmas present

August 29, 2008

Filed under: Ice Skates — Shane @ 12:13 pm

This year, the people of Lowestoft will get a unique gift for Christmas. The festive season will be fueled by a new ice rink in the town. The announcement about the new ice skating rink was made recently.

It was revealed by The Lowestoft Town Management Partnership that a synthetic ice rink “Magic Ice” was booked for the town centre from December 20 to December 22, a total of three days.

Business support officer of the partnership, Emma Jones, said that the ice rink would be located outside Woolworths and Sportsworld near the Christmas Tree. The partnership had considered other areas in the town but found them unsuitable for an ice rink. This area was most suitable for an ice rink as it had a very flat surface, which is essential for a rink.

With the children on their Christmas holidays, the partnership is very confident of attracting a lot of visitors to the ice rink. The ice rink is expected to give the Christmas celebrations a whole new dimension. Tickets will be made available soon for the locals and details will be provided shortly.

People in Lowestoft are already waiting eagerly for Christmas to visit the ice skating rink.

Lots of fun for kids at Playday in Knowsley

August 28, 2008

Filed under: Ice Skates — Kellie @ 12:12 pm

When you think of summer holidays, ice skating might not be the first thing on your mind. However, for the youngsters in Knowsley, this summer was the perfect chance to get on their ice skates and get skating on the ice rink.

Hundreds of kids turned up at the play day in Knowsley and took part in various activities. There were a lot of activities that the kids could try for the first time. The event was held as a part of the national Playday at the King George V fields in Huyton.

Many youngsters were excited and thrilled to try ice skating for the first time. Dave Smithson, the Deputy Mayor of Knowsley attended the event and said that the theme of this year’s Playday was ‘Give Us a Go’. This is the reason why the event had some really new and unusual activities that no one would expect at a summer time event.

The Mayor himself ended up giving it a go at the ice skating along with the children. The entire idea behind having a national Playday is to encourage the children to go out and try some new activities that would improve their confidence, creativity and imagination. The kids can get to try something that they have never imagined before at such events.

Louise Smith, the young ice skater from Wardle, is looking forward to skating.
The 10 year old ice skater has been ice skating for only two years and has already made her presence felt. Her coaches at the Blackburn Arena are happy with her performance and the progress made by her in a very short period.

Louise achieved her skating gold passport, last year in October. She began taking part in competitions in March this year and has already won many competitions throughout the UK. She has won 3 gold medals in Bristol, Hull and Lee Valley, and two silver medals in Deeside and Telford competing against 200 ice skaters.

The young girl is now a Level 2 figure skater and will take the test for Level 3 next month. She aims to reach the Level 8 of National Ice Skating Association that will allow her to take part in qualifier competitions of International Judging.

From there, she aims to reach the Novice British Championships and pursue a career in figure skating. Louise is being coached by two former British Champions, Karen Barber and Stephen Pickavance.  Both of them are happy and excited with her progress. They are pretty confident that Louise will have a great ice skating career.

Rachael to support the ice skating rink in Southampton

August 23, 2008

It was exactly 17 years ago that Rachael Ley-Smith took part in a campaign to protect the Top Rank Ice skating rink in Southampton from being turned into flats. She was pictured presenting the petition to the mayor as a 3 year old ice skater. Now, after almost two decades, she is back for the same cause.

The battle for saving the ice rink has gained a lot of momentum in the last few months. More than 35000 signatures have been made in a petition by protestors to fight off the developers from building the land.

However, the petition was not enough as the protestors were only promised that the ice rink would be developed somewhere else.

Rachael said that it was very disappointing to see that the city still has not got an ice skating rink. She loved skating over there and would want her children to be able to enjoy ice skating locally too.

Rachael, who is an optometrist by profession, hopes to join the march on Friday August 22, exactly 20 years since the closing down of the old ice skating rink.

She said that it would be amazing to have the ice skating rink back in Southampton. People fail to realise the popularity of ice skating.

Tony Barron, Rachael’s father was an ice skating instructor at the Top Rank ice rink. She said that his father, who has moved to Milton Keynes, would love to come back for ice skating in Southampton.

Roller skating is not a big deal. There are hundreds of records of men and women all over the world roller skating long distances. But Rafael Mittenzwei has done something really different. He has travelled a distance of 208.4 kms in just about 24 hours. The only catch is that he was roller skating backwards.
Rafael Mittenzwei achieved the amazing feat in a record time. He was roller skating backwards in the German town of Gross – Gerau.

Mr. Rafael Mittenzwei was initially joined by another roller skater in this feat but the other skater had to pull out after he developed a problem with his feet.

He started roller skating at night from his local sports club Blau – Gelb in Gross – Gerau, to the south of Frankfurt.

Mr. Rafael Mittenzwei said that the Guinness Book of Records had set them the challenge of roller skating at least 200 kms backwards within 24 hours. This meant roller skating the track for 658 laps. He managed to roller skate 685 laps of the track backwards (208.4 kms).

This secures them a place in the Guinness Book of Records. The German was obviously very excited and happy with his achievement.

The best way to cherish Tchaikovsky at Burghley

August 21, 2008

Filed under: Ice Skates — Tyler @ 10:49 am

A crowd of more than a thousand was left breathless as they witnessed a spectacular show of throws and lifts, exciting aerial gymnastics and bold fire effects at the first ever ice show in the area. The wonderful grounds in Stanford’s Burghley House played host to Sleeping Beauty on Ice, an Imperial Stars production. The event took place inside the Tented Ice Palace for the first time in history.

The crowd turned up in large numbers and was left speechless as the dancers performed on the specially designed ice skating rink. The performance was accompanied by full theatrical lighting, beautiful costumes and lavish sets.

The performance was set on Tchaikovsky’s wonderful score. The ice show tells the classic love story through a breath taking ice dancing performance that includes throws and speed lifts, fire effects and stilt skating.

The cast of 23 included World, Olympic, National and European Championship ice skaters. The audience was gripped by the performance of these professional ice skaters. The choreography for the performance was done by former Olympic medallist and World Champion Ilia Averbukh and Tony Mercer.

The event was a sell-out on the opening night itself and the organisers were happy with the turnout. People who witnessed the performance were delighted and the organisers received a lot of positive feedback.

Dyke and Chick win the British Roller Skating Championships

August 20, 2008

Filed under: Roller Skates — Shane @ 8:43 am

The hard work has finally paid off for Darren Dyke and Kirsty Chick. After working hard and practicing relentlessly for over four years, they have won the senior dance title in Haywards Heath, Sussex, at the British Roller Skating Championships.

Dyke’s achievement is well deserved. The veteran has been in skating for the last 30 years. The win at the British Roller Skating Championships marks the pinnacle of his career. Dyke exclaimed that it was indeed a lifetime ambition and achievement, something that he had always strived for in the last 30 years that he was involved with the sport.

Dyke felt that his dream was slipping away from him during the last few years of his career due to lack of proper training times and the costs associated with it. Dyke had to bring over his coach to train and prepare for the event. With the win in hand, all this seems to be a distant worry now.

Dyke said that he and Kirsty were on top of the world after the spectacular win. They are extremely confident of performing well in the European Championships in September this year.

They are waiting for the feeling to sink in and have already started preparing for their next competition.
