German man creates new record by skating backwards

August 22, 2008

Roller skating is not a big deal. There are hundreds of records of men and women all over the world roller skating long distances. But Rafael Mittenzwei has done something really different. He has travelled a distance of 208.4 kms in just about 24 hours. The only catch is that he was roller skating backwards.
Rafael Mittenzwei achieved the amazing feat in a record time. He was roller skating backwards in the German town of Gross – Gerau.

Mr. Rafael Mittenzwei was initially joined by another roller skater in this feat but the other skater had to pull out after he developed a problem with his feet.

He started roller skating at night from his local sports club Blau – Gelb in Gross – Gerau, to the south of Frankfurt.

Mr. Rafael Mittenzwei said that the Guinness Book of Records had set them the challenge of roller skating at least 200 kms backwards within 24 hours. This meant roller skating the track for 658 laps. He managed to roller skate 685 laps of the track backwards (208.4 kms).

This secures them a place in the Guinness Book of Records. The German was obviously very excited and happy with his achievement.
