What Is The Best Age For A Kid’s First Roller Skates?
February 4, 2010
There should be a disclaimer on the latest Evian advert: “Caution: Do Not Practice This At Home.” While the sight of tiny babies on roller skates is a cute and impressive bit of filming it is, of course, all fake –but realistic enough to cause some parents to try it out with their own offspring.
They won’t get very far – the roller skates were CGI created. It isn’t possible to buy quad roller skates that small in reality – well, certainly not from us at Skates. We do, however, have some really cute adjustable Disney kids skates available in Junior UK size 6. Then again, children’s feet grow to all sizes. Some babies who aren’t able to walk have already outgrown a 6! So, what age should your child wear their first roller skates?
The babies in the Evian ad were scarcely past the crawling stage – far too young to put into skates. Fisher-Price recommend any age from 2 upwards is okay for “starter” quads like our Disney Princess and Pixar ranges. Then again, children develop at different rates, so a rule of thumb is to say the child should be walking and running proficiently before you start thinking of putting wheels under their feet. When you do so, it must be under very strict parental supervision. You wouldn’t put a young child on a 2-wheeled bike without stabilisers.
We agree that introducing children to roller skates at a young age is an excellent idea – it’s healthy and it’s fun. Just make sure they’re ready, that’s all.
