Skateboard Sizes Explained – 7.5", 7.75" & 8" Deck Widths
Introduction: Skateboard Sizes Explained
Since 2007, Skates.co.uk has helped skaters pick the right board, and the single most common question we get is about size. Skateboard size is measured by the width of the deck, in inches, and choosing the right width makes a real difference to control and comfort. This guide explains the main sizes, from 7.5" to 8" and beyond, and who each one suits. Browse all our complete skateboards any time.
Why Width Matters More Than Length
When people talk about skateboard size, they almost always mean the deck width, not the length. Width is what affects how the board feels underfoot. A narrower deck is lighter and easier to flip, which suits technical street skating and smaller riders, while a wider deck gives more stability and foot room, which suits ramps, transition and bigger riders. Length and wheelbase do vary, but for most skaters width is the number to focus on.

7.5 inch Skateboards
A 7.5" deck is on the narrower side, which makes it light and quick to flip. It suits technical street skaters and those with smaller feet who want a nimble board. It is a popular choice for teenagers moving up from a kids board who are focused on flip tricks and street skating.
7.75 inch Skateboards
The 7.75" width is the most popular all-round size and the one we recommend to most teens and adults who are unsure. It strikes a balance between being easy to flip and stable enough for general skating, ledges, parks and cruising. If in doubt, this is usually the safe choice.

8 inch Skateboards
An 8" deck gives more stability and foot room, which makes it a favourite for ramps, transition and skaters with bigger feet. It is still versatile enough for street, so plenty of all-round skaters ride an 8" too. As decks get wider than this, they lean increasingly towards transition, vert and cruising.
Matching Size to Shoe and Age
Shoe size is a helpful guide alongside width. As a rough rule, smaller feet suit narrower decks and larger feet suit wider ones. For children, age and shoe size together are the best guide, and our kids skateboard buying guide breaks down the right width by age. FAQs
What is the most popular skateboard size? 7.75" is the most popular all-round width for teens and adults. It balances flip-friendly nimbleness with enough stability for general street and park skating.
What size skateboard should a beginner get? For most adult and teen beginners, a 7.75" or 8" complete is ideal. Children should size down to a mini board, which our kids guide explains in detail.
Is a 7.5 or 8 inch skateboard better? Neither is better overall, they just suit different skating. A 7.5" is lighter and better for technical street tricks, while an 8" is more stable and better for ramps, transition and bigger feet.
Does skateboard length matter? Length matters less than width for most skaters. Width is what affects how the board feels and how easily it flips, so it is the main number to choose by.
